A law establishing the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was passed during the last session of the Indian Parliament during which an act was passed to establish the university. Indira Gandhi National Tribal University was established in 2007 as a result of an act passed by the Indian Parliament in 2007, and it became operational in the summer of 2008. This university has been accredited by both NAAC and the University Grants Commission, which are both accrediting bodies of this university.
