IIT Kanpur has started a Masters’s course in Economics. MSc Economics course will begin from the next academic year, 2023-2024. Students need not be Economics graduates. However, they will be required to pass an undergraduate qualifying examination in engineering, GATE, or IIT joint entrance examination for the Master’s or JAM examinations.
Abhay Karandikar the director of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur launched the program. Taking to Twitter, Professor Karandikar wrote, “The program is designed to enable students to acquire core competencies as professional economists and to leverage the unique combination of specialization at the frontiers of Economics and Technology IITKanpur to provide advanced skills in emerging multidimensional areas.”

This course will begin in the academic year of 2023-24. Those students who are interested can make the changes in their GATE 2023 or IIT JAM Application. Students who completed their undergraduate with the minimum first division are eligible to apply. Those students can also apply for this course who came from both Economic and Non-Economic backgrounds.
GATE or JAM is mandatory, Students can present either in Economics (GATE-HSS (Economics) or JAM-Economics) or any other subject. However, they have to appear for GATE 2023 or JAM 2023. Applications for both will close on 14 October 2022.
Students who are in the final year of their undergraduate course can also apply for this course. However, their admission will depend on their course merit and fulfilling the minimum eligibility criteria.
As per the official websites, the program would emphasize ‘analyzing economic data using modern statistical packages such as STATA and R and on quantitative economic modeling using computing languages such as Python and MATLAB.
